Lighter materials and aerodynamic designs improve energy efficiency, while innovations in braking and bearing technology reduce lifecycle costs and environmental impact. The push for modal shift, moving freight from road to rail, is another strong driver, as railways are typically three to four times more fuel-efficient per ton-mile than trucks.
