High-Velocity Sand Slurry Placement and Containment Bunds

Building land out of the sea begins by constructing massive perimeter walls, known as containment bunds, out of heavy rock armor. These bunds outline the shape of the new land and protect the reclamation site from waves and currents. Once the bunds are secure, trailing suction hopper dredgers pump a high-density sand slurry into the enclosed area through floating pipelines.

The sand settle out of the water quickly, building up layers of new ground, while the water flows out through adjustable weir gates. Engineers carefully monitor the placement of the pipelines to ensure the sand spreads out evenly, preventing soft mud or fine silts from getting trapped inside the core of the new land, which could weaken the foundation.

Foundation Stabilization and Soil Compaction Techniques

Because the reclaimed sand is pumped in with water, the new land starts out as a loose, water-logged matrix that cannot support the weight of heavy buildings or runways.

If left alone, the ground would settle unevenly over time, which could crack foundations and damage pipes.

To stabilize the ground quickly, engineers insert thousands of vertical wick drains deep into the sand and pile heavy loads of earth on top. This weight forces the trapped water out through the wick drains, compressing the sand grains together into a dense, solid foundation. Contractors also use heavy crane-mounted weights to tamp the surface, making the new ground strong enough to support heavy structures.
