The architecture based on domain controllers offers substantial benefits in terms of vehicle performance and development efficiency. By consolidating processing power into fewer, more capable units, manufacturers can reduce the total number of ECUs from over 100 to as few as 5-10, significantly reducing wiring harness weight and complexity. This consolidation also improves data flow between systems, as information can be shared more easily within a domain, enabling more sophisticated features. For example, an ADAS domain controller can fuse data from cameras, radar, and lidar sensors to create a comprehensive environmental model, making more accurate decisions for features like automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise control.

The transition to domain controllers is a critical enabler of the software-defined vehicle, where functionality is defined by software running on powerful hardware platforms. This approach allows manufacturers to update and add features throughout the vehicle's lifecycle via over-the-air software updates, reducing the need for hardware changes and creating new revenue opportunities. The automotive E/E architecture market continues to advance domain controller technology, with developments in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence processing, and secure communication that support increasingly capable and autonomous vehicles.
